Edwin Carr (composer)

Edwin Carr, MNZM ( born August 10, 1926 in Auckland City; † 27 March 2003 Waiheke Iceland ) was a New Zealand composer and conductor.

Biography

From 1940 to 1943 Edwin Carr visited the Otago Boy's High School. From 1945 to 1946, he first studied at Otago University, and later at Auckland University College, where he reached no conclusion. In 1946 he attended the first music school in Cambridge, where he studied composition with Douglas Lilburn. In 1948 he traveled to England, where he met Geoffrey Grey. He also worked in Italy as musical director of a ballet school. In 1958, he traveled back to New Zealand, where he taught until 1960 and composed. In 1977, he traveled to Australia, where he taught at the Sydney Conservatorium. In 1984, he returned as a freelance composer again back to New Zealand. In 1991 he moved to Waiheke Iceland, where he remained active as a composer. On 27 March 2003, he died at his home on Waiheke Iceland.
