Edy Hubacher

Eduard " Edy " Hubacher ( born April 15, 1940 in Bern ) is a former Swiss bobsledder and athlete. He was in the 1960s, the best ball piercing, discus throwers and multi-event athlete of his country, then switched to bobsledding and 1972 Olympic champion in the four-man event.

Career

From 1964 to 1970 improved Hubacher, who started for the TV Länggasse Bern, 15 times in a row, the national record in the shot put; he increased while its performance of 16.26 m to 19.34 m. From 1968 to 1970, he broke five times in a row, the national record in discus throw and finally reached a length of 56.78 m. Overall, he won 16 Swiss league title in the shot put, discus, pentathlon and decathlon. His shot put personal best of 19.17 meters in a decathlon was surpassed to this day by any other athletes in this discipline. Hubacher participated in the Summer Olympics in 1968 in Mexico City; in the shot put, he reached the 15th place in the discus he came in at number 25

In 1970 Hubacher was in Magglingen in training camp, where he happened to be the Anschiebeübungen of bobsleighers watched and tried it themselves. After he had achieved straight away the best, bob pilot Jean Wicki persuaded him to test drives in Koenigssee and took him into his team. As Wickis brakeman he won the bronze medal at the European Championships 1972 in St. Moritz. A few weeks later, the biggest success of his career: Along with Wicki, Hans Leutenegger and Werner Camichel he won at the Olympic Games in Sapporo the gold medal in four-man; added was the bronze medal in the two-man bob. He then ended his sports career.

Hubacher was a teacher by profession in Iffwil. He achieved fame as a " mystery uncle of the Nation" by he created crosswords and other puzzles for numerous magazines and newspapers. From 1973 to 2003 he was on Radio DRS 1 co- presenter of radio music box.
