Ee ( Frisian: Ie) is a village in the municipality Dongeradeel in the Dutch province of Friesland. Ee is located east of Dokkum and has about 890 inhabitants (2008 ).

It is believed that Ee has derived from the Latin aqua (water). With only two letters Ee is the shortest place name in the Netherlands.

History

Ee was built on a mound and probably existed even before 900, because in 1980, remains were found of gray kneaded pottery. Since 1580 will be held in the village church not Roman Catholic, but a Protestant church service. 1879 had 1085 inhabitants of the village. However, the population went back to 1889 to 993, because agriculture could not keep up with the increased competition from abroad.

Twinning

Ee graduated with Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - the place with the longest place name in Europe - and Y - a French place with the shortest local name of Europe - a city partnership.
