Eesti Põlevkivi AS is a subsidiary of the energy company Eesti Energia. The joint stock company is the largest producer of oil shale in Estonia. Eesti Põlevkivi is still fully state-owned.

History

The first mention of the oil shale (Estonian Põlevkivi, " burning stone " ) in the region dates back to 1725. However, was with the industrial mining of oil shale until 1916, during the energy crisis of the First World War started. With the independence of Estonia from Russia 1918, and the state of the oil shale mining accepted. Background was the fact that Estonia has hardly any other indigenous energy sources. In 1919, the company Riigi Põlevkivitööstus, founded in 1922, the corporation Kiviõli. By 1940 there were six in Estonia state or private production company who specialized primarily on Kuckersit. After the end of World War II and the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union, the new rulers forced the removal of oil shale. In 1980, over 31 million tonnes produced annually. They were used mainly for power generation.

Business

The company Eesti Põlevkivi was founded in 1945 as a Soviet state enterprises. The company's headquarters is now in Jõhvi, the capital of the district of Ida- Virumaa. Main activity of Eesti Põlevkivi is the over-and underground mining of oil shale in northeastern Estonia. Eesti Põlevkivi produces around 14 million tons of oil shale per year. The conversion is currently an annual 1.8 billion kroons (approx. 115 million euro ). The company 's 3,500 jobs major employer in the structurally weak, strong Russian- dominated region. Current CEO is Ilmar Jõgi (* 1958).

80 % of the produced oil shale is converted into electricity or heating power, mainly in the powerhouse of Narva. The remainder is used for the production of special oils, gases, or cement.

Subsidiaries

Eesti Põlevkivi has three subsidiaries:

  • Põlevkivi Kaevandamise AS as operator of the open pit at Narva and Aidu and the two oil shale mines "Estonia" and " Viru ".
  • AS Põlevkivi Raudtee, a railway company for the transportation of oil shale, at a length of over 200 km
  • 35 % stake in Orica Eesti OÜ, a company for the manufacture of explosives
