Efik or Calabar is one in Nigeria Cross River State Calabar and around 500,000 people of spoken language, including a second language their number of speakers is estimated to be 2 to 3 million. The speakers are also called Efik. Efik is part of the Cross River branch of the Benue - Congo languages , a large sub-unit of the Niger - Congo. It is considered one of the Nigerian Offizial languages and is used in schools, universities and adult education. Its use as a lingua franca is declining. Efik is written in the Latin alphabet ( with special characters ), there are radio and TV programs.
