Egem is a hamlet of the borough Bambrugge of Erpe -Mere at the Molenbeek in Denderstreek in the Flanders region. It is located in the southeast of the province of East Flanders and belongs to Arrondissement Aalst. The hamlet is bounded by Bambrugge itself, Vlekkem, borough of Erpe -Mere, Ottergem, borough of Erpe -Mere and Zonnegem, borough of Sint -Lievens -Houtem. Egem also borders the domain Steenberg. Egem today consists of two streets, the Egemstraat and Everdal.

History

To Egem, which is dependent on Bambrugge extends to the border of the village Vlekkem. Over the centuries Egem had the following names: In the oldest documents, you spoke of Heddeghem (1571 ), later by Edeghem ( 1629), Hettegem ( 1638), Eedegem ( 1763), Eghem (1779 ) and 1842 Eegem is mentioned. Like all Flemish place names " gem" is also that of Egem etymologically back to a Germanic composition with " heem ", German: " haim ", living space, and a derivation on " inga ". The first part is, in the opinion of J. Mansion reconstructed from the Germanic name Haid, Hait of awareness. Composed be Haidingenheem results ( which corresponds Haidingahaim or Haidingenheim in German ), which is the residence of the tribal members or supporters of the franc Haid, as a modification then Heddeghem. The place name Egem belongs to the group of Ingahemnamen that are older than regular Hemnamen. Egem was founded at the beginning of the Merovingian period in the sixth to seventh century, and so has an older origin than Bambrugge. Probably Egem was an isolated farmstead, which was not very large. It was later absorbed by the rapidly evolving Bambrugge.

  • The Egemmolen or Meuleken Tik Tak ( dt: Egemmühle ) is an overshot water mill and is in Everdal 21 It was a corn mill. The waterwheel was removed. The mill was largely destroyed, but there are still remnants of this mill and the miller's house is still intact. The mill is not Rijksmonument, that is not a listed building.
