History

In May and June 1968, the original line-up of Egg performed under the name Uriel on in London and Woodford; after recording the first demo tape, guitarist Steve Hillage left the band in August of that year in favor of his studies.

At the insistence of the management of the London clubs Middle Earth, which also led the band itself from December 1968 Uriel changed in January 1969 changed its name to The Egg, which has been shortened a little later to Egg. Under this name the debut single Seven Is A Jolly Good Time was released in August 1969 on the label Nova, a subsidiary of Decca Records, under whose logo the following year, the first regular album Egg appeared.

In July 1972, Egg disbanded officially, but found themselves in 1974 for the recording of the album The Civil Surface back together. After the release of this album is the way the group split up for good.

Members

Members of Egg were Dave Stewart (organ / keyboards), Mont Campbell (vocals and bass guitar ) and Clive Brooks (drums). While Uriel had not played mainly cover versions, Egg went on to give his own songs for the best; especially Campbell wrote many pieces.

Arzachel

1969, a year after the founding, Egg signed the recording contract with Decca Records. Around the same time submitted to the label roulette Dave Stewart the offer, record an LP with at this time highly sought after psychedelic music. Because both Egg and Uriel, however, were bound by contract to Decca, the group decided, under the name Arzachel and with Steve Hillage on guitar, so in the original Uriel cast, meet the offer. After recording the self-titled album Arzachel the group split in the same year again.

Music

The music of Egg was a mix of progressive rock and psychedelia. It was dominated by Dave Stewart's keyboards. Together with Caravan and Soft Machine Egg regarded today as a pioneer of the Canterbury style, which had its heyday in the 70s.
