Egg rolling

The Easter Slide, colloquially mostly just eggs Slide, Upper Sorbian Jejkakulenje, is a for over 400 years in Bautzen on Easter Sunday exercised custom. In addition to the Easter ride and the Sorbian eggs painting this custom main tourist attraction of the city is at Easter time.

The event will take place on Protschenberg above the Spree place opposite the old city of Bautzen, and was first mentioned as egg rolls already in 1550. The forms and rules were varied:

In the original form of children were eggs and other things roll from wealthy families down from the slope, which were collected from children of poor families.

At later times, the eggs pushing for all children was similarly organized. Hard-boiled eggs, apples, oranges or other halfway round objects were rolled down the mountain. The children of Bautzen and the surrounding area were on the slopes of the mountain and tried to collect the items.

In a modified form of children's eggs were rolling down the slope. The winner was the one whose egg remained intact, the longest distance laid back, or who at the end of most unbroken eggs had left.

Today we used colorful plastic balls that can be redeemed for prizes.

Slide eggs in other places

The Easter Slide is also known in Eastern Styria. In parts of Brandenburg (eg Brandenburg an der Havel and in Prignitz ) and in the Altmark one practices this tradition under the name " Easter eggs coast down" from.

In pearl mountain ( Prignitz ) the hard-boiled eggs down in competition successively the slope are " trundled ".
