Eggenberg (Graz)

The district Eggenberg in Graz is the 14th city district. The district includes east to the districts of Lend and Gries and is bounded to the west by Plabutsch. The name goes back to the Schloss Eggenberg and its founding family.

Since 2010 the castle and wide areas are in the central part of the district, a UNESCO World Heritage City of Graz - Historic Centre and Schloss Eggenberg.

History

The district is named after the Eggenbergs that their residence, the Eggenberg castle, built in 1625 here, has a long and impressive history. Findings point to a settlement since the Neolithic Age. In Algersdorf they found two burial sites from the Roman period. Also, on the old road can be traced back to Roman times. In the Middle Ages until the 19th century the landscape was dominated by agriculture and viticulture on the slopes of Plabutsch hill. In today belonging to Eggenberg village Baier bei Graz there was the Good Baierdorf.

1850, the local church Eggenberg was formed. It was divided into the Kastralgemeinden Algersdorf, Baierdorf Wetzel village. In addition, there were the villages Plawutsch and Krottendorf (now in Wetzel village). Through the brewery Reininghausstraße (from 1853) and the expansion of the industrial area around the station was a change from a rural castle village to the working community. This is also reflected by the Built in the late 19th century, workers suburban New Algersdorf.

In 1906 the market survey of Eggenberg. Although 1914 Wetzel village was self-employed, Eggenberg was in the interwar period, with more than 15,000 inhabitants the most populous municipality in Austria. In the course of February 1934, there was fighting in the social democratic dominated Eggenberg, which also housed the headquarters of the consumption of bitter fighting between members of the Federal protection on the one hand and the Home Guard and soldiers of the armed forces on the other side. There were a number of dead, injured and alone in consumption building 130 prisoners.

After the "Anschluss of Austria" was incorporated in 1938 Eggenberg in Graz.

In the last third of the 20th century took place mainly in social and educational field upgrades of the district: ASKOE Stadium, Pedagogical Academy (1969 ), large indoor and outdoor pool (1974 ), Emergency Hospital (1981 ), LKH - Graz West ( 2002).

Traffic

  • By 1973, the Graz West Bypass was planned across the highway through Phyrn Eggenberg. Through the establishment of the district Plabutsch tunnel was spared this burden.
  • Tram lines 1 ( Eggenberg - UKH ) and 7 ( Wetzel village). The line 1 took on 28 November 1900 as a small train Electrical Graz - Eggenberg to traffic between Anne Street / Mohsgasse and ( until 1951 maintained ) terminal Kurhaus Eggenberg ( Baier road / mountain road).
