Egmont Islands

The Egmont Islands ( dt Egmontinseln ), also called Six Iles are a coral atoll in the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The comparatively small Atoll is located less than 10 km south of the southernmost, the submerged coral reef in the Great Chagos Bank. The next island is Danger Iceland, which lies less than 30 km to the north.
Including the lagoon and the adjacent coral reef, the atoll on an area of 29 km ², the pure land area is, however, just 4 km ². The largest island of 1.5 km ² Eastern Egmont ( Ile Sud- Est), which took place on the first settlement. Ile Lubin is the same size, all other islands are smaller and completely covered with coconut trees.
History
Eastern Egmont was settled at the end of the 17th century, at the same time, were occupied than other atolls of the Chagos by the French.
1838 the atoll was fully explored by Commander Robert Moresby and mapped. At this time there was a coconut plantation on the atoll. Between the islands, a dam was erected to connect them. In addition, more land was acquired, which combined some individual islands into a larger one.
Since the Chagossians were expelled mid-20th century, the atoll is uninhabited.
Others
On the northern edge there are two ways into the lagoon, Fausse Passe in the Northeast and a major way to the northwest. The Egmont Islands are one of the most popular stopovers for traveling sailors who sail through the Chagos Archipelago.
The individual islands are all on the southern edge of the coral reef. From southeast to northwest:

- Ile Cipaye (also Sipaille or Cipaille )
- Île aux Rats
To the west of the island of Ile aux Rats, there was a small island, which has now become by reclaiming the Île aux Rats to.
