Egri Bikavér

The Egri Bikavér is a Hungarian wine. In German-speaking he comes as Bull's Blood in the trade.

The Egri Bikavér is produced in the North Hungarian wine region of Eger. He is a blend of at least three red varieties. Carrier type was originally the in cultivation and vinification sometimes problematic kadarka, which was blended with wines from Blue Oporto, Merlot, and Cabernet Kékfrankos. Frequently vineyards were also planted along with these vines, and the grapes formed as a natural wastage, the so-called Joint sentence. Today especially the Kékfrankos forms the base wine, while wines from kadarka are relegated to the background.

Will be expanded to the low-acid, deep, dark, full of red wine in old oak barrels and aged for at least two years before bottling.

Good compositions may be of excellent quality. However, relatively average mass of wines are often sold under this brand name.

Except in Eger a blend named Bikavér wine is made in the Hungarian wine region Szekszárd.

Legend

According to legend, the defenders of Eger drank their native wine to boost their morale and will to fight. However, when Ottoman besiegers saw the red-colored beards of the defenders, they believed that Egri had drunk the blood of bulls, in order to acquire their ferocity and strength struggle and finally retreated, because they were demoralized by this impression.
