Fontanka

The Egyptian Bridge (Russian Египетский мост ) in Saint Petersburg performs the Lermontov Avenue over the Fontanka River.

Chain Bridge

The original chain bridge was a remarkable monument to the early 19th century. It was built by the architects William of Traitteur and Christianowicz 1825-1826. At the ends of four granite blocks were erected, which were decorated with sphinx figures made of cast iron sculptor Pavel Petrovich Sokolov and hexagonal lanterns. The standing on both ends of the bridge entrance gates made of cast iron were used as suspension for the support chains. They were decorated with Egyptian motifs and with numerous hieroglyphics.

William of Traitteur built at the same time, the Access Bridge and the Lion's Bridge, which are also equipped with figures of Sokolow.

The constructed for pedestrians and horse drawn Egyptian bridge collapsed on 20 January 1905 due to a broken carry chain as a cavalry squadron crossed the bridge. Of the 60 soldiers entrained all could be saved, so that only several horses were drowned in this disaster.

Arch bridge

At least 17 different plans were drawn before the decision was made to build a bridge again at the same place. The arch bridge built in 1955 was designed by W. and P. Wassilkowski Areschew. Some of the decorations used in this case, like the Sphinx characters had, the collapse of the chain bridge unscathed and were reused.
