Egyptian parliamentary election, 1984

Parliamentary elections held in Egypt on 27 May 1984.

Since the last election in 1979 changes were made in the electoral system. The 176 two -member constituencies were ( a total of 448 seats) replaced with 48 multi -member constituencies, with candidates who are elected through a party list system and a blocking clause of 8 % of the vote to win a seat.

The result was a victory for the ruling National Democratic Party ( NDP), which won 390 of the 448 seats. The only opposition party that was able to win seats, was the New Wafd Party. After this election, President Hosni Mubarak appointed 10 more members of the People's Assembly; one of the NDP, four of the Socialist Labor Party, one of the National Progressive Unionist Party and four Copts. The turnout was 43.1 %.
