The egg mountain is a mountain in medium trust in Lower Franconia with a hillfort, backed demonstrated for the early Iron Age.

Geography

The mountain is a long-drawn back and is bordered by a steep slope on the east side directly on the running of the scattering ( a tributary of the Franconian Saale ) at the place means good.

At the foot of the mountain there are several sources with a very high pile which directly feed the stray.

The hillfort

The hilltop site is situated on the plateau of the mountain on the eastern escarpment to the scattering out. North side protects a steep little valley the system. West side to the site can still mounting, a 130 m long and up to 2 m high wall recognize. In the interior, with approximately 13,000 m² open excavations rows of houses that are aligned to the ramparts with their long side to the inner free surface. Use of this building was a residential and storage buildings.

Recent archaeological phases in 1982 and 1985 with more detailed archaeological investigations show for the hillfort at present the following stages of development:

  • First ascents probably from the Mesolithic, the elderly, and especially the young Neolithic;
  • Intensive settlement in the Hallstatt period;
  • Largest expansion phase in the 4th century BC, with a replacement of the old ramparts by a post slot wall and a nearly 17 m wide trench
  • Further use phase in the 7th century AD

Archaeological finds are ceramics, bracelets, brooches, clothing accessories, parts of metal objects and parts of bronze vessels. The plant is one of the extensively investigated test site monuments of Iron Age Lower Franconia.
