The track is built north of Densborn mainly twofold. You on the other hand served today in rail passenger transport with through binding to Köln Messe / Deutz one hand, and to Trier Central Station.

History

In 1864 the construction of the Eifelbahn of Düren and Euskirchen Gerolstein began to Trier. On October 1, 1875, the Left Rhine line was connected from Euskirchen out in Kalscheuren. Numerous bridges and tunnels of this route, as well as, inter alia, the construction of the stations Euskirchen, Weilerswist and Kaiserbahnhof Kierberg were carried out by Hermann Schmalenbach.

Before the First World War, the Prussian Railway Administration was planning to electrify the Eifel circuit as one of the first railway lines in Germany. But this failed because of the opposition of the military, because the track was too close to the French border. Also connect the Eifel track was planned with the track Bonn -Koblenz in Sechtem, which was also never realized (see also Strategic embankment ).

By the end of the Second World War, the entire route was expanded to double track. Thereafter, the second main track was dismantled by order of the French occupation forces in the southern most part. The track material was brought to France. In the northern section ( English zone) the second track remained almost the entire length, while it was omitted in the southern area, expand the distance double track again. The space of the second track were supplied in many places other uses, often for a bike path parallel to the path.

Freight traffic

The Eifel track is not electrified until today. Also in the 1970s, this again led discussion failed. The result is that freight trains take from the Ruhr area to the Saar and Lorraine continues to detour via Koblenz. On 28 December 2001 finally sailed the last freight train DB Cargo (now DB Schenker Rail ), the Eifel circuit.

The regional transport in the Eifel was subsequently taken over by the non-federally owned railways EBM Cargo and VEB. DB Schenker Rail (then Railion ) promoted doing the freight trains from Cologne -Gremberg first to Euskirchen. From there, the cargo is distributed further. While DB Schenker Rail handles the operation of Derkum, Euskirchen and Meckenheim ( Voreifelbahn ), Gerolstein and Bitburg- Erdorf be served by handing over freight trains. First, for the EBM Cargo was responsible economic responsibility. Since the bankruptcy of EBM Cargo the volcanic Eifel -Bahn (VEB) from Gerolstein is responsible for passing freight trains, the largest cargo is long timber block trains. The Ladestraße in Blankenheim ( Forest) is it served since 2012 by the VEB regularly again.

Since the summer of 2013, the transfer of cargo to DB Schenker Rail no longer in Euskirchen, but in Trier - Ehrang done. Reason is the topography of the Eifel circuit. Since 2 July 2013, the operation of the newly created siding in Birresborn from where track laying gravel is also transported in the direction of Trier - Ehrang done.

Passenger

In passenger traffic, the route of D- trains was used, the coming alternately inverted from Saarbruecken of Trier on the Mosel Eifelbahn or the route via Koblenz to Cologne, often in addition to Münster ( Westphalia ). After electrification of the Mosel line 1974 showed a clear preference for the Mosel route. About the Eifelbahn mostly frequented only passenger trains. 1982 these were upgraded because of the use of express coaches to surcharge-free D- trains with four-digit train number.

In the transport of the hour was introduced with a compression north of Gerolstein or Juenkerath on the Eifelbahn 1991. Approximately every two hours also drove fast passenger trains and regional express trains between Cologne and Trier. In 1996, the route was upgraded for arc quick trips to take the RE trains Saarbrücken - Trier - Koblenz to lead tilting trains series 611 of the Eifel track from Saarbruecken to Cologne. Technical problems with the vehicles foiled this project so that the RE trains from Saarbrücken continue to Koblenz operate with connection in Trier on diesel trains on the Eifel circuit to Cologne. A special feature is that even in the 2011 timetable for contractual reasons, yet a pair of trains ( Saturdays trains 12078 and 12083 ) operates with a tilting train, but in which the tilting system is turned off.

Rolling stock

Until the 1970s the steam locomotives of the series 39 and 01 dominated the express train, while in all Prussian freight freight locomotives were used, in the Reichsbahn - time, the heavy .44 locomotives. They were gradually supplanted by steam locomotives of series 50 and 86. Added to this were the 1950s in passenger locomotives of the class 23

Once up in the 1950s Prussian compartment cars the appearance given in local traffic, after three - and four-axle Umbauwagen prevailed. With the onset of Verdieselung the route locomotives of the DB series 211 and 216 were common. Moreover drove 1964-1980 railcars of the type 624 of the railway depot Trier the route.

The Prussian compartment cars were replaced by n- car from the 1970s with fabric by diesel locomotives DB Class 215. From 2001 the engines were replaced by the DB Class 218, in addition to the diesel railcar of the DB Class 644-2009 particular the image of the regional trains on the Eifel circuit in traffic red livery. Individual trains were run during this time with railcars of series 612 and 628. Since the timetable change in December 2009, the inserts of series 218 are completed. Instead, now run railcars of Class 628 In December 2011, also ended the operations of VT 612 from December 2013 to railcars of type LINT 54 are used.

When rapid rail each contemporary cars were used. Of the types of DRG you went very early on to the DB - standard cars of the UIC design.

Supply planning

For the timetable change in December 2013, the Eifel circuit was re-tendered, by 2013, the passenger is solely operated by DB Regio NRW. The offer is being sorted again. Today's RE 22 will then run every hour; as fast trains still remain three so-called Sprinter trains, so that the journey time is prolonged on average. However, there will be more trips between Cologne and Euskirchen in the rush hour. For use DMUs of type Alstom Coradia LINT to come.

Extension

The state government of Rhineland -Palatinate, has given the doubling of the track and the simultaneous electrification for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2015.
