Eight Corners

Octagons was originally the name of Potsdamer Strasse crossing Hohewegstraße (today Friedrich- Ebert -Straße) / sword- road. Here Carl von Gontard planned in the years 1771-1773 an ensemble of four houses in the then typical late Baroque style. The name was derived from the design of the four facades ago with two corners. The ensemble is centrally located in the city center between the old market and the new market.

Model prison could Filippo Raguzzinis design of the Piazza di S. Ignazio in Rome here have worked, which took place from 1727-28 in Rococo forms.

Only one of the houses in the Friedrich- Ebert-Straße still exists today and has been renovated recently. An eye-catcher is the wrought iron balcony railings. At the next house ( Friedrich- Ebert- Straße 121 ), there is a plaque in memory of Heinrich Heine.

As part of the redesign of the Potsdam city center adjacent Friedrich- Ebert-Straße is returned to its original width and built the east side again. Whether the newly built houses to resume the historical form of octagons, is not known.
