Eizi Matuda

Eizi Matuda (Japanese松田 英 二, Eiji Matsuda ), born April 20, 1894 in Nagasaki; † February 12, 1978 in Lima (Peru ), was a Mexican botanist Japanese descent. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Matuda ".

Life

Matuda was the son of Hanjiro and Ōtsuna Matsuda. He studied at the University of Taipei and was from 1914 to 1922 Professor of Botany in the then annexed by Japan Taiwan. In 1922 he founded his own farm in Escuintla in the Mexican state of Chiapas. In 1932 he founded in Escuintla, the Instituto botánico Matuda. From 1951 on, he was a visiting professor and curator at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. From 1954 to 1959 he was a senior botanist at the Instituto de Investigación Forestal ( Forestry Research Institute ) from 1955 to 1965 then Head of the Botanical Department. In 1953 he received an honorary degree from the Sociedad Forestal de México ( Mexican forestry company) and belonged to a number of scientific societies such as the Sociedad de México botánica ( Mexican Botanical Society ). He wrote in particular the monographs Mexican aroids (1954 ), Mexican Dioscoreae (1953), Mexican commelinae (1955), Helechos de Estado de México ( " Ferns of the State of México ", 1956 ) and numerous articles. 1960 Matuda received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tokyo.

Matuda collected plants for herbaria in Mexico, China and Belize.

Original descriptions and Ehrentaxa

Matuda described a number of new species of the flamingo flowers, philodendron, window sheets, Tagblumen etc., but hardly have known about their native country as well, as these groups of plants ( in contrast to orchids and succulents ) are more than utility plants than as collectibles. Some of these are no longer recognized as a species.

The plant genus Matudaea Lundell. has been named after him. In addition, a number of plant species was designated by other botanists Matuda honor, such as Aechmea matudae, Mammillaria matudae, Pitcairnia matudae, Thelocactus tulensis ssp. matudae and Tillandsia matudae.
