Eke Church

The Church of Eke (Swedish Eke kyrka ) is a country church, which belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Eke. It lies between the road 142 and the east coast of the Swedish island of Gotland, 53 km south of Visby and 7.5 km south of Hemse.

Church building

In the first half of the 13th century, the choir and the long house were built in the Romanesque style. Later, around the year 1300 came around the church tower so. The church is built largely of sandstone. During the restoration of 1916, the wooden floor was broken. Using dendrochronological dating was learned that the wooden planks of the 1070er years come. The planks were formerly a stave church.

Interior and equipment

  • The baptismal font is particularly well preserved. It was manufactured in the late 12th century by master stonemason Sighraf. On him relief figures are seen with six different scenes: Annunciation
