Ekwendeni is a town about 20 km west of Mzuzu, in Mzimba district of Malawi. It is one of the busiest and largest in the Northern Region of Malawi. Ekwendeni located on the west side of the Viphya Mountains and was founded by Scottish missionaries. There stands the oldest church in Malawi, which belongs to the Malawian branch of the Scottish Church.

Ekwendeni is a wide area surrounded by tobacco fields. The population of the district has the highest HIV / AIDS infection rate in Malawi, mainly because there is a major resting place for truck drivers who drive down to Tanzania and Kenya.

Ekwendeni has a hospital, which is run by the Presbyterian Church and largely financed from the USA and from Scotland.
