History

The Patagonian Andes forests were colonized after the last ice age about 14,000 years ago. The first people who settled here were among the nomadic people of the Indian Tsonek. In winter, these migrated to the climatically favorable Lake Region. In summer and autumn, they devoted themselves to hunting guanacos. From before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century we know very little about the Tsonek. Their culture was, however, more and more influenced by the coming of the West Mapuche Indians.
