El Diquís Hydroelectric Project

The El Diquis hydropower project is a dam project of the ICE (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad ), the supply of electricity to Costa Rica, which is currently in the planning stage. It lies between Buenos Aires (Costa Rica), Osa, Puntarenas and. It will be 631 MW when completed the most powerful hydroelectric power plant in Central America. It will produce electricity for more than one million consumers; so that it exceeds the Pirris hydroelectric power plant, which was completed in January 2011 and in September 2011, should begin production. For the project, 7363.5 acres of land is consumed, of which 915.6 hectares of indigenous territory. There are in the region created 3500 jobs and the electricity produced could be exported to neighboring countries.

The hydroelectric power plant of the dam should be at some distance in Palmar Norte. This includes two transfer tunnel.

Previous planning Boruca

The $ 2 billion expensive major project is the successor of the dams project Boruca, this is in the planning for more than 30 years. It is now called " Proyecto Hidroeléctrico Diquis ". Diquis means " Great River " in the language of Terraba. So far the project was named after the people " Boruca " and was due to a slightly different location. This included an aluminum plant. Protests of Boruca people prevented the construction. The builder ICE moved after the project to the directly west adjoining land of Térraba. Now the Río General instead of the Río Térraba to be dammed. Térraba the results from the confluence of the Rio General and Río Coto Brus.

Indigenous protest

The construction plans are opposed by the indigenous people of the Terraba, partly because about 1500 people would be resettled.
