El Faro (digital newspaper)

El Faro ( The Lighthouse German ) is the largest Internet newspaper in El Salvador, it is considered the first online newspaper in Latin America, which appears without a print edition.

History

El Faro was established on 25 April 1998 by the journalist Carlos Dada, Salvadoran and Greek origin and the businessman Jorge Siman. The first release was on 14 May 1998 The issues are published daily in the Spanish language and are divided into the following sections. :

  • LA GUÍA

El Faro also operates a radio station broadcasting 105.3 MHz on the FM frequency.

Editing

The newspaper has an independent editorial and promotes critical analysis and reporting of national and Central American situation.

Editor in chief Ricardo Vaquerano. Editors are: Carlos Martínez, Sergio Arauz, Óscar Martínez, José Luis Sanz, Elmer Menjívar, Roberto Valencia, Daniel Valencia, Gabriel Labrador, Efren Lemus, Patricia Carias, Oscar Luna and María Luz Nóchez. The picture department is headed by Mauro Arias and José Carlos Reyes. For the cartoons Otto Meza is responsible.

Awards

  • 2011 Carlos Dada received the Maria Moors Cabot award (to be awarded since 1946 ) from the Universidad de Columbia.
  • 2012 Carlos Dada was awarded the WOLA price. The ceremony took place on 19 September 2012 in the French Embassy in Washington, DC instead.
