Elbhangfest

The Elbhangfest is a street festival in Dresden, which takes place on the river slopes between the districts of Loschwitz and Pillnitz annually on the last weekend in June. It was first organized in 1991 and is one of the largest celebrations the city of Dresden. Every year an average of 80,000 people the Elbhangfest.

Festival site and program

The festival area is locked during the event for car traffic. It is bordered by Körnerplatz in Loschwitz and the castle Pillnitz. Other important points are the Rhododendron Garden and the districts of Wachwitz Niederpoyritz and Hosterwitz.

As part of the festival is also regularly the Dresden Dragon Boat Festival with races on the Elbe.

History

The first Elbhangfest took place on 29 and 30 June 1991. The occasion was the rebuilding of the church in Loschwitz, built by George Bähr, and the receipt of the Vineyard church in Pillnitz, built by Daniel Pöppelmann. The festival 's motto was, therefore, " From Bähr to Poeppelmann ". For the second Elbhangfest, a year later, a non-profit association was founded to organize the festival. A highlight at the festival in 1993 was the placement of the tower of the ball Loschwitzer church.
