Eleanor of Viseu

Eleanor of Portugal, also known as Eleanor of Viseu, (* May 2, 1458, † November 17, 1525 ) was from 1481 to 1495 Queen of Portugal ( as the spouse, not as regent of his own right ) out of the house Avis.

Eleanor was the daughter of Prince Ferdinand of Portugal, Duke of Viseu ( a son King Edward I of Portugal ), born. Her mother, Beatriz, a princess of Portugal was (she was granddaughter of John I of Portugal).

1481 she married King John II of Portugal. Her husband was so paternal her cousin and her mother's second cousin. By marriage, she was awarded the title of Queen of Portugal, which she wore to her husband's death in 1495.

The queen is credited with the founding of the Portuguese city of Caldas da Rainha. In 1484 they will be encountered on a trip from Óbidos to Batalha to some rural residents who bathed in a foul-smelling water point near the road. The man told her the warm water would have healing powers. Also Eleonore believed himself cured after a bath from a few maladies, prompting the construction of a bathhouse for healing purposes at this point. The following year, the building, which was finished in 1496 or 1497 began. From 1488, however, the business was already taken. Around the " Hot Spring Queen ", the translated name of the place, soon formed a settlement as the nucleus of the city of Caldas da Rainha.

With John II Eleanor had two sons, one of whom died shortly after birth. Also, the heir to the throne died in 1491 and thus before the king. It was mainly due to Eleanor's influence that John II, could not enforce his plan to make his illegitimate son George of Lancaster, Duke of Coimbra, his successor, and, instead, with Eleanor's brother, Emmanuel I, the lucky one the nearest legitimate male relatives Johann II, this was followed on the throne.
