Elem Klimov

Elem Klimov Hermanovitch (Russian Элем Германович Климов, scientific transliteration Elem Klimov Germanovic; born July 9, 1933, Stalingrad, † 26 October 2003 in Moscow) was a Russian film director.

Life and work

Klimov, son of a designer and a sports teacher, first studied in 1952 at the MAI Moscow, where he made his diploma in 1957 as a flight engineer. After working in this profession he studied until 1963 film directed in the master class of Yefim Dsigan on WGIK. Already his diploma film Welcome or unauthorized entry is prohibited attracted attention in 1964: that was playing in a pioneer camp satire was initially banned short, but then released and a popular success.

His internationally best-known films are Agonia (1974/1981) about the spirit healer Rasputin and Come and See (1985 ), a grim parable of the Second World War. After this film Klimov ended provisionally his career as a film director to seek an elected first secretary of the new association filmmakers in the times of massive social upheaval ways out of the crisis of the Soviet cinema. Later arose for Klimov no further opportunity to realize films, so that the height of his film work at the same time marked the end point.

Elem Klimov was married since 1965 with the director and writer Larissa Shepitko that during the shooting of her film Farewell Matyora in a car accident died 1979. The film was completed in 1982 by Klimov.
