Elementary cognitive task

As elementary cognitive task (English elementary cognitive task ) a test set is referred to in the Differential and general psychology, which is testing a small number of basic mental processes and their specific reactions. There are no uniform criteria to be met by such a task.

The English term (ECT ) was proposed in 1980 by John Bissell Carroll. He assumed one could analyze test performance by breaking them down to their component parts.

Despite the simplicity of such cognitive tasks, but were found correlation between the achieved performance in them and other objects and constructs. For example, between the Raven test ( Progressive Matrices ) and the intelligence in the general factor model. Although it must be emphasized that the correlations have not been adequately studied in the speed of elementary cognitive tasks in order to draw clear conclusions.

Other examples of elementary cognitive tasks are:

  • Hick'scher choice reaction test ( Roth, 1964)
  • Inspection Times by Chris Brand & Ian Deary (1982 )
  • Memory scanning task after Saul Sternberg
  • Letter- matching task after Michael Posner ( psychologist )
  • Rotation problem
