Elevador da Bica

The Elevador da Bica (also: Ascensor da Bica ) is one of three funiculars in Lisbon. It combines the Rua de São Paulo with the located in the Upper Town Largo do Calhariz. On a length of 260 meters, it overcomes a height difference of 45 meters.

History

The cable car was constructed by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, who was also responsible for similar projects. She went on 28 June 1892 in operation. It was originally driven by water ballast, 1896 converted to steam and finally electrified in 1914. After an accident in 1916, the operation was interrupted for nine years.

In February 2002, the Elevador was declared a National Monument.
