Eley peak was mapped by the United States Geological Survey as part of the compilation of Ellsworthgebirges in the years 1961-66 by site surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the summit after Richard G. Eley of the United States Navy. Eley flew into the Antarctic summers 1965/66 and 1966/67, with a photographer on flights over the Marie Byrd Land and the Ellsworthland.
