The elves stone from the HWN - stamping point 120

The elves stone is about 475 m above sea level. NN high mountain spur of the Northern Slope of the resin with the same name granite rock formation above the main town of Bad Harzburg in the unincorporated area of the county Goslar Harz ( Lower Saxony).

Geographical location

The Elfenstein located in the Upper Harz Harz nature park. It rises west of the main town of Bad Harzburg and southwest of the hamlet Harzburger Bündheim between the Valley of Gläsecke in the West and that of the bleach in the east.

Description and History

On the mountain there is the granite rock formation Elfenstein (about 420 m above sea level. NN ), which was mentioned in 1578 as Elwenstein first written. In the Middle Ages the rocks were considered to be the abode of elves and similar luminaries.

Archaeological finds from the area indicate a settlement in the Bronze Age. On the northeast flank of the wooded mountain, near the path between the Bleichenbach and former Silberborn, 1857 an old Germanic residential and burial was discovered.

Viewing and hiking

From the stairs walk- rock formation Elfenstein, which is included as No. 120 in the system of stamp locations of the Harz hiking pin, is a look at Bad Harzburg and in the northern Harz foreland.
