Eli C. D. Shortridge

Eli CD Shortridge ( born March 29, 1830, Cabell County, Virginia; † February 4, 1908 in Devils Lake, North Dakota ) was an American politician and from 1893 to 1895, the third Governor of the State of North Dakota.

Life

Born in what is now West Virginia Eli Shortridge moved in 1833 with his parents in the Monroe County, Missouri. There he attended the local schools. In 1882 he settled in Larimore in the Dakota Territory. He participated in the political life in his new home. He was a member of the Populist Party, which nominated him as its candidate for the upcoming 1892 gubernatorial elections. With the help of the Democratic Party, he was able to win the election against the Republican incumbent Andrew H. Burke.

Policy

Shortridge joined his two-year term on January 3, 1893. During his tenure, the financing of the south wing of the Capitol was saved. Also at the head office of the governors of North Dakota was purchased. The laws of the state were revised again. In 1894 Shortridge waived a possible re-election. Therefore, he resigned from his post on 10 January 1895. After that, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture authority in Devils Lake. He is also passed in 1908. Eli Shortridge was married twice and had five children.
