Elīna Garanča

Elina Garanca ( born September 16, 1976 in Riga, Latvia) is a Latvian mezzo-soprano.

Life

Elina Garanca comes from a musical family, the father is a choral conductor, his mother Anita Garanča singer. Originally Garanča interested in the musical, after finishing school, she opted for the opera singers ( Prototype: Joan Sutherland ). Garanča studied singing at the Latvian Music Academy with her mother and Sergei Martynov, then in the U.S., in Amsterdam and Vienna (with Irina Gavrilovici ). At the age of 21, she had first engagements in Bucharest and Athens. About the opera houses Meiningen and Frankfurt am Main it arrived at the Vienna State Opera, and made ​​his debut as Lola in Cavalleria rusticana.

By winning the International Mirjam Helin Singing Competition 1999 in Finland the opera world 's attention on the mezzo-soprano. Joan Sutherland, who was part of the jury, called it a " brilliant voice" and the " appearance of a born diva ".

The international breakthrough came with the otherwise dark game of Annio in Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito at the Salzburg Festival 2003 ( Conductor: Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Director: Martin Kušej ). She made her debut at Covent Garden in London with Così fan tutte in July 2007. In October 2007, she stood for the first time as Carmen in Riga on the stage, while conducting her husband Karel Mark Chichon. In January 2008, the debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York followed by Rosina in The Barber of Seville. She convinced in the 2012/13 season at the Metropolitan Opera in La Clemenza di Tito in the role of Sesto.

Her repertoire includes songs by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, de Falla, Berg, Sibelius, Strauss, and spiritual works of, inter alia, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Rossini.

A study published by Virgin Classics arias CD with works by Mozart was awarded the Editor 's Choice in Gramophone. Since 2006 she has been with Deutsche Grammophon.

Elina Garanca moderated since November 2010, the late-night show ARTE Lounge on ARTE. In March 2011, she sang at the opening of the Vienna Opera Ball, the aria Mon coeur à ta voix s'ouvre from the opera Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint- Saëns.

With her husband Karel Mark Chichon she has two children Elina Garanca speaks excellent German, since she was engaged in Meiningen in 1998 by studying away to the theater.

Traditionally, their commitment since 2008 in Classical Music under the stars before Göttweig, which takes place annually in early July as an open air concert.
