Elisa Carrió

Elisa María Avelina Carrio ( born December 26, 1956 in Resistencia, Chaco Province) is an Argentine politician and founder of the party Alternativa para una República de iguales (ARI ), now Coalition Cívica ARI.

Life

Elisa Carrio was born into a tradition-conscious family and chosen in their youth to the beauty queen. After the return of democracy in Argentina, it was selected for the Unión Cívica Radical ( UCR) as Members of their province. In the presidential election in 1999, it supported at the request of her mentor Raúl Alfonsín candidate Fernando de la Rúa.

After the termination of the coalition with the Socialists and the Frente País Solidario ( Frepaso ) 2000, Carrio joined the Democratic Socialist Party and, together with other politicians por una República Argentinos de iguales (ARI ), first as an informal grouping. After disagreements with socialist members of the group they left the ARI and Carrio and other politicians resigned from their respective parties and founded the party Afirmación para una República Igualitaria ( also abbreviated ARI).

In the presidential election in 2003 was a candidate Carrio, reaching 14% of the vote and fifth place. In the 2005 parliamentary elections Carrio was deputy for the city of Buenos Aires.

Carrio entered as a candidate for the merger Coalition Cívica again in the presidential elections of 2007. In March 2007 she resigned as deputy to run their election campaign. Together with Rubén Giustiniani, chairman of the Socialist Party, it reached 23% of the vote and came in second after Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. She scored the majority in Buenos Aires and Rosario, but was defeated in the province of Buenos Aires.

After the election, she said, not wanting to run for president again, opting instead to be regarded as " opposition leader " and to support other candidates in the next election in 2011. However, in December 2010, she announced to compete at the 2011 primaries as presidential candidate of the Coalition Cívica.
