Elizabeth Smart kidnapping
The Abduction of Elizabeth Smart began in 2002 when the U.S. citizen was kidnapped from her home in Salt Lake City in the U.S. state of Utah. In 2003, she was discovered after nine months in Sandy in Salt Lake County. Police arrested the two kidnappers and rescued the girl.
Life
Elizabeth Smart was born on 3rd November 1987 in Salt Lake City and comes from a devout and wealthy Mormon family. She is the daughter of Ed and Lois Smart, has a sister, Mary Katherine, and four brothers, Andrew, Edward, Charles and William. The family lives in Salt Lake City. Since 2003, she attended East High School in Salt Lake City. You completed a harp studies at Brigham Young University in Provo.
Her parents, Ed and Lois Smart published on 28 October 2003, the book Bringing Elizabeth Home, which has been the basis of the movie The Elizabeth Smart Story of 9 November 2003. On 5 May 2006 Elizabeth Smart was with her father Ed Smart guest in the CNN talk show Larry King Live.
Abduction
Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped at night on 5 June 2002 from the nursery of her parents' house in front of her sister Mary Katherine in Salt Lake City in the U.S. state of Utah. Her father Ed Smart had directly after the abduction, together with his wife, Lois, and numerous relatives launched a publicity campaign and offered a reward of 250,000 U.S. dollars. From the population of more than 16,000 notes were received.
On 12 March 2003 a woman Elizabeth Smart had recognized in the company of a man and a woman in a parking lot in front of a branch of Burger King in the suburb of Sandy. Then the witness alerted the police. The two suspects Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Eileen Barzee were arrested. The girl wore a veil and dark sunglasses. She was released imprisonment by the authorities after 280 days and brought to safety.
After the homeless Brian David Mitchell America's Most Wanted had been sought nationally until the previous month on the television program. The kidnappers had let Elizabeth Smart live during the whole captivity on the road. The nine -month torture left deep marks on the girl. After the long period of isolation from normal life her personality had changed so much that the police suspected that she had been subjected to brainwashing.
Elizabeth Smart was nervous and did not initially want to talk to the authorities. According to Daniel Brian David Mitchell had wanted the girl as a second wife. The kidnappers are said to have the girl initially kept hidden near the city in a basement in Salt Lake City and later in the mountains. The kidnappers were traveling with the girl first to San Diego in California and Atlanta, Georgia. The case of Elizabeth Smart made within the United States for great public interest.
