Elizabeth Sutherland, 24th Countess of Sutherland

Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland, 24th Countess of Sutherland ( born March 30, 1921) is a British Peeress and non-party politician.

Life and career

She was born in March 1921 as Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, the only child of Major Lord Alastair Sutherland - Leveson - Gower ( 1890-1921 ), a son of Cromartie Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland, and its wife, the former Elizabeth Demarest (1892-1931), the former wife of John GA Leishman, Jr. and daughter of Warren Gardner Demarest from New York City.

Her father died on April 28, 1921 at the age of 31 years during an expedition in Rhodesia of malaria. The mother remarried 1931 Baron George East Driesen, but died three months later. Elizabeth was then a ward of her uncle George Sutherland - Leveson - Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland. After his death, she inherited suo jure, ie in its own right, the title of a 24th Countess of Sutherland and Lady Strathnaver 24, while the title of duke and the other titles that are inherited in the male line, to John Egerton, 6th Duke of Sutherland went. They also inherited most of the large estates, including Dunrobin Castle. It changed its name to Sutherland to be recognized as Chief of Clan Sutherland.

She is director of Sutherland Dunrobin Trust. Sutherland is currently a member of the Hereditary Peerage Association.

Membership in the House of Lords

With the title she also inherited the then associated seat in the House of Lords.

Your seat lost by the House of Lords Act 1999. For one of the remaining seats they had not set up for election. Even in later elections, they did not appear to. She is not listed in the Register Of Hereditary peers.

Family

They married on January 5, 1946 Charles Noel Janson ( 1917-2006 ).

They had four children:
