Elkan Naumburg

Elkan Naumburg ( born January 1, 1835 in Treuchtlingen; † July 31, 1924 in New York City ) was a German banker and philanthropist who immigrated to the United States.

Life

Elkan Naumburg grew up as the son of a Jewish cantor on Treuchtlingen. At 15, he emigrated with his brother's family to Baltimore in the United States. There Naumburg founded a textile company. In 1893 he founded in New York, the Bank E. Naumburg & Co., a competitor of Goldman Sachs, which Naumburg became rich. Naumburg financed a bandstand in Central Park, 's why you jazz song on the mall dedicated to him. Naumburg also financed the first kindergarten his hometown Treuchtlingen and regularly donated large sums of money, which is why we named him an honorary citizen of the city.
