The Elli - class is a class of frigates of the Hellenic Navy, which had initially been partly built for the Royal Netherlands Navy as Kortenaer class. Two of the ships were sold in 1981 to Greece, the other in 1993, followed by 2001.

History

The frigates were designed in the 1970s as a universal ships in order to respond to both threats from aircraft, submarines and warships can. They had, like most of their time a frigate designs COGOG (Combined gas or gas) propulsion system.

The eight ships of the German Navy F122 Class, built at the same time, are from the same design and are the Kortenaer class very similar.

A total of ten ships of the Royal Schelde in Vlissingen and two other of Wilton Fijenoord were built in Rotterdam 1975-1982. Of these, two have already been sold during the construction phase to the Hellenic Navy and the Netherlands replaced by two new ships of Jacob van Heemskerck - class, which had better air defense capabilities. The contract for the sale of the first two ships to Greece was signed on 15 September 1980, on 9 November 1992, the contract was followed by the purchase of three other ships owned the Dutch Navy.

The last five ships of the class went to her decommissioning in the Netherlands between 2001 and 2004 also to Greece.

After their takeover, the ships of the Greek Hellenic Shipyards were overhauled, also followed a general overhaul of all ships by 2009 at the same shipyard.

Technology

The frigates of the Elli class are 130 meters long, 14.5 meters wide and displace with a draft of 4.4 meters maximum of 3800 tons standard. The drive of the vessels is carried out by a COGOG system, two Rolls- Royce Tyne RM1C gas turbines each with 4,900 hp are used speed at cruising speed to 20 knots, two Rolls- Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbines each with 25,700 hp bring the ships to their top speed of 30 nodes. The range is 4700 nautical miles at 16 knots cruising speed.

The armament consists of an Oto Melara 76 mm Compact gun on the front deck. For the anti-ship use, the frigates are equipped with two quad starter for RGM -84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. For use against air targets located in front of the bridge, a Mk 29 octuple launcher for RIM -7 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles. Four torpedo tubes for Mark 46 lightweight torpedoes complement the armament.

In the hangar on the aft deck two Westland Sea Lynx helicopters can be carried, but in the peace operation is just a helicopter on board.

A LW 08 Long Range Air Surveillance Radar and a WM25 search and tracking radar provide data for the SEWACO II computer system with Link 11 data link and satellite communications. A Scout navigation radar supports navigation of the ship. A Westinghouse AN/SQS-509-Bugsonar allows the detection of underwater targets.

In Greece, the ships were overhauled and given as a substitute for the Goal Keeper short-range defense system, the American Phalanx CIWS. The first two ships, Ellis and Lemnos, two only a Phalanax CIWS were installed in the other. Other improvements included the communications, radar and battle management systems. In addition, the control systems for the machine have been replaced.
