Elmer Kelton

Elmer Kelton Stephen ( born April 29, 1926 at the Andrews County, Texas, † August 22 2009 in San Angelo, Texas) was on an American journalist and writer who was particularly known for his Western novels.

Biography

Kelton was born in Andrews County in West Texas on the Horsecamp the Five Wells Ranch, which belonged to the Scharbauer Cattle Company. His parents were Robert W. "Buck" and Beatrice " Bea " (nee Holland ) Kelton.

As Kelton was three years old, the family moved to the McElroy Ranch, which is on the two counties Crane and Upton. There he spent the rest of his childhood - his father worked there until 1965.

After the completion of Crane High School located Kelton enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, which he attended from 1946 to 1948 and again from 1942 to 1944 and left with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism. In the period between Kelton had served in the U.S. Army and had to make in Europe also struggle experiences.

He married the Austrian Anna Lipp, with whom he has two of its own and a process pioneered by his wife in the marriage child.

Since 1948, Kelton spent 15 years in charge of the department Farm and Ranch in the San Angelo Standard - Times. For five years he was editor of the Sheep and Goat Raiser Magazine and 22 years at Livestock Weekly.

Seven of his novels, Buffalo Wagons, The Day the Cowboys Quit, The Day It Never Rained, Eyes of the Hawk, Slaughter, The Far Canyon and The Way of the Coyote, won a trace Award of Western Writers of America; three more City: The Time It Never Rained, The Good Old Boys and The Man Who Rode Midnight the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

1995, his novel The Good Old Boys by Turner Network Television was filmed; the main role was played Tommy Lee Jones.

1977 Kelton received for his life's work the Owen Wister Award; 1998 a further price for the entire work, the Lone Star Award for Lifetime Achievement.

In 2007, his memoir, Sandhills Boy published.
