Elsbeth Juda

Elsbeth Juda (also Jay as a pseudonym; born 2 May 1911 in Darmstadt) is a British photographer, journalist and art collector. She was known for her work in the fields of fashion and the world of work in the UK Trade and Investment magazine, The Ambassador.

Early life

Elsbeth Juda is the daughter of the philosopher Julius Goldstein (1873-1929) and his wife Margaret ( Gretel ) Goldstein ( 1885-1960 ). Gretel Goldstein, nee Neumann, was the daughter of Mainz Wine merchant. Julius and Gretel were married on March 19, 1907.

At the age of eighteen years Elsbeth Juda went to Paris, where he worked as a secretary in the banking industry. In 1931 she married her childhood sweetheart, the journalist Hans Judah ( 1904-1975 ). The couple moved to Berlin, where Hans found a job as a financial editor of the Berliner Tageblatt. In 1933 she emigrated from Germany and settled in London.

Life and work

Judah studied photography under Lucia Moholy (1894-1989), the wife of the artist László Moholy -Nagy ( 1895-1946 ). 1940 Hans Judah publisher and founding editor of The Ambassador. Elsbeth, who spoke fluent English, unlike Hans came, later added as a fashion photographer and co-editor of the journal.

The Ambassador was supplied between 1940-1965 under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Judah into an important marketing tool for the UK economy and to the Second War by the British government continuously with paper. Elsbeth was in close contact with a variety of artists, writers, designers and photographers. Together with her husband she built up a collection of contemporary art. Many of the represented in the " Hans and Elsbeth Juda Collection" artists were among her personal friends.
