Elvegårdsmoen

Elvegårdsmoen is a military training area and a supply base of the Norwegian armed forces about 15 km north of Narvik in the Norwegian county of Nordland. It is located at the northeastern end of the Herjangsfjords, a northern tributary of the Ofotfjords, southeast of the village Bjerkvik and on the south side of the small river Elvegårdselva. West of Elvegårdsmoen, on the banks of the fjord, which here several kilometers identical European Routes E 6 and E run 10

World War II

Elvegårdsmoen was in 1940 during the Battle of Narvik and the German occupation of Norway ( company Weserübung ) of some importance. First, it was taken on April 9 by German mountain troops of the 3rd Mountain Division under Major-General Eduard Dietl who had been landed by the destroyers Wolfgang Zenker, Erich Koellner and Hermann Künne at the end of Herjangsfjords. During the ensuing fighting there was recaptured on 13 May by troops of the French Foreign Legion. Since the German Empire had but opened the Western offensive against France on 10 May the fighting in North Norway Allied troops were withdrawn from 24 May to reinforce the front in France. The German Wehrmacht was therefore able to re-occupy Narvik in June and Elvegårdsmoen. The facilities were partially destroyed during the fighting by aerial bombs, but then used by the German occupiers and expanded.

Since 2005 Elvegårdsmoen headquarters of the Home Guard District 16 North Hålogaland.
