The mountain was mapped by United States Geological Survey as part of the acquisition of the area in the years 1961-66 by site surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names to Douglas J. Elvers, a seismologist who participated at the South Pole - Queen Maud Land Traverse II of the United States Antarctic Research Program in the summer of 1965/66.
