It rises in Rhineland -Palatinate in the High Eifel on Hochkelberg at Bereborn and flows predominantly in an easterly direction, first by Monreal, then turning south-southeast to open at Mosel core into the Moselle. In Kaifenheim the Elz is spanned by a 97 m high motorway bridge the A48, the Elz Valley bridge. In deep underflow Pyrmont Castle lie with the waterfall of Elz and on a rock above a loop Burg Eltz.

The Elz separates the lower reaches the sloping landscape of the May Field Moseleifel. Therefore, the Eifel side of the Elz is still sometimes called by the Maifeldern today " Üver - Elz ".

Only along the upper reaches to Monreal there is a road, the underflow is idyllically situated in a deep valley and can be explored on foot or in part by bicycle.
