Emanuel Sweert

Emanuel Sweerts (* 1572, † 1606 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch merchant plants.

Life

The 1572 baptized in the Dutch Zevenbergen Emanuel Sweerts married Margaretha van der stone. One of his grandchildren is the bookseller and poet Hieronymus Sweerts. Sweerts acted with bulbs and rare plants. Many of these plants he cultivated in his well-known garden in Amsterdam. He regularly traveled to the fair in Frankfurt. There he had a business against the Romans. Emperor Rudolf II tried in vain to win him as head of his gardens in Prague.

His original trade catalog was the template for his work Florilegium amplissimum et selectissimum ( 1612 ). In it are depicted 243 flowering plants in the second part 330 in the first and onion. Additionally, it is with a multilingual index ( Latin, Dutch, German and French) provided. From the popularity of his work is proved by numerous new editions as 1614, 1620, 1631, 1647 and 1655 (all in Amsterdam).

Ehrentaxon

Carl Linnaeus named in his honor the genus Swertia the plant family of the Gentian Family ( Gentianaceae ).
