Emil Devrient

Gustav Emil Devrient ( * September 4, 1803; † August 7, 1872 in Dresden ) was a German actor.

Biography

Devrient came first as an apprentice in the chemical factory of an uncle in Zwickau, but soon turned to his brothers, Eduard Devrient and Karl August Devrient, the theater and debuted in 1821 in Braunschweig as Raoul in the " Maid of Orleans ".

Only after he had found in 1823 in Leipzig a commitment, he devoted himself exclusively to the spectacle. In 1828 he moved to Magdeburg, where he followed a call to Hamburg in 1829. Here he completed his dramatic education, and found in 1831 in Dresden at the court stage a permanent position from which he retired after 37 years of service on May 1, 1868 in order to, according to his own words, as an artist not to have to survive themselves.

Appointed associate honorary member, he was the first actor the Knight's Cross of the Saxon Order of Civil Merit and was appointed councilor. He was also winner of the Iffland -Ring.

He was married to Doris, nee Böhler (* 1805 in Kassel) who was also an actress. The marriage was divorced in 1842.

The actor rests today on the Old Anne Cemetery in Dresden's southern suburb, his grave has not been preserved.

Honors

Devrient in honor of the Devrient street was named in Dresden.

Him as an honorary member was dedicated by the members of the Saxon court theater at the end of his work with the stage in May 1868 bronze medal. She has created the Austrian medalist Henry Jauner (1833-1912):
