Emil von Dungern

Emil Freiherr von Dungern (* November 26, 1867 in Würzburg, † September 4, 1961 in Ludwigshafen am Bodensee ) was a German internist.

Emil von Dungern attended high school until 1887 in Freiburg im Breisgau. He then studied medicine at the universities of Freiburg, Munich and Berlin. After graduation and licensure in 1892 he habilitated in 1896 in Freiburg, where he became associate professor in 1902. From 1906 to 1913 he served as Director of the Biological Division of the Cancer Institute of Vincenz Czerny in Heidelberg, before he himself was appointed head of the Cancer Institute of the Hospital in Hamburg- Eppendorf, which he directed until 1918.

As Serologe, bacteriologist and physiologist Emil von Dungern enjoyed an international reputation. In particular, his blood group research together with Ludwik Hirszfeld ( Ludwig Hirschfeld ) have pioneered worked and led to new insights in the field of paternity determination. With him he brought in 1910 in a work as the first evidence for the heritability of detected and differentiated by Karl Landsteiner in 1901 blood groups. He also developed a significant research activities in the field of immunology and cancer.
