Emilia Pires

Emília Maria Valeria Pires ( born in 1961 (?) In Rairobo, Portuguese Timor ) is, since August 8, 2007 Minister of Planning and Finance of Timor-Leste in the government of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. Pires belongs to no party.

Life

Pires grew up on the land of the colony of Portuguese Timor. At the outbreak of the civil war in 1975 she was 14 years old. Her family was evacuated on board a Norwegian freighter to Australia. The following years the family lived in Melbourne. Pires received from the La Trobe University with a degree in mathematics and was then a PhD student of Constitutional Law in Melbourne. At 22, she was a civil servant with the Government of Victoria.

In 1999, the United Nations took over the administration of East Timor after 24 years of Indonesian occupation. Pires was prepared for the UN the Timorese National Development Plan. She then worked as a consultant to the World Bank in the Palestinian Authority. Simultaneously, she was able to complete her Masters at the London School of Economics 2004. Later, she became chief adviser to the Ministry of Finance UNMISET East Timor, head of Sekretäriats the Planning Commission of UNTAET and head of the National Development and Planning Agency. Before she became finance minister in 2007, she held the position of UNMIT Senior Coordination Advisor on the International Compact to the DSRSG in East Timor.
