Emma Terho

Emma Kristiina Terho, née Laaksonen ( born December 17, 1981 in Washington, DC, USA ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who plays on the position of the defender for the Espoo Blues in the SM- sarja Naisten since 2008.

Career

Emma Terho began her career at the 1996 Espoo Blues and finished with her team in 1997 and 1998 respectively in third. In 1999, she won her first Finnish championship with her team.

College Hockey

In 2000, she decided to take a move to North America and studied between 2000 and 2004 at Ohio State University. In parallel, she played for the Buckeyes, the woman hockey team of the University, in the WCHA, a league of the NCAA. In 2002 she was chosen because of her outstanding play in the All-America team and was nominated for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. Their share of the construction of the woman hockey program at Ohio State University was honored in October 2008 with a solemn ceremony, their jersey number # 3 has been disabled by the university.

Finnish Championships with Espoo Blues

After time at the University, she returned to Finland, where she has since lived with her husband and a son in Espoo. First, they played again for the Blues and was in season 2006/ 07 Captain of the team. 2005 and 2007 they won with the Blues another league title, while the 2006 team finished in third place. During the 2007/ 08 season she played for SKIF Nizhny Novgorod in the Russian Women's Premier League and won with SKIF end of the season the Russian Championship. She then returned to Espoo and won with the Blues in 2009 and 2013 two more championship titles. During the 2011/12 season she sat back from active competition.

Internationally

After Emma Terho had played between 1995 and 1997 for the U22 Junior Women of Finland, it was for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano in 1998 nominated and won as the youngest player of the Finnish national team (16 years and 54 days) the bronze medal. So she was also the youngest Finnish Olympic medalist of all time.

In 2000, she won the bronze medal at the World Championships and repeated this success at the World Championships in 2004, 2008 and 2009. Moreover, she participated in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010 part, being 2010, another bronze medal.

When Air Canada Cup 2008, the World Championships in 2008 and 2009 and the 2010 Winter Games, she was captain of the national team. At the beginning of the 2010s Emma Terho was a member of the Finnish Olympic Committee.
