Emmanuel Charles Quist

Emmanuel Charles Quist (* 1880 in Accra, Ghana, † 1959 ) was a lawyer and politician in the British colony of the Gold Coast and in Ghana.

Life and work

Quist was between March 6, 1957 - 1957 entrusted with the office of Speaker of the first Legislative Assembly ( Legislative Assembly ) of the independent state of Ghana and 31 December - the founding of Ghana. He was the first Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament. Already since 1951, Quist was the first speaker of the representation of the people in the Legistlative Assembley the then British colony of the Gold Coast. In January 1958 Quist was replaced by Augustus Molade Akiwumi in office. Quist was honored with the Order of the Order of the British Empire in the rank of the officer. Furthermore, the conference hall of the Parliament in Accra was renamed The Speakers Conference Hall to Quist.

He married in 1914 in Accra Joana Hesse- Buckman (* 1892 in Accra, † 1955 ibid.). From this marriage, his son Charles Lawrence Quist dates ( 1916-2001 ).
