Emperor Toba

Toba (Japanese鸟羽 天皇, Toba tennō; * February 24, 1103; † July 20, 1156 ) was the 74th Tenno of Japan ( 1107-1123 ). His proper name was Munehito (宗仁). He was a son of the Horikawa - tennō but was raised by his grandfather, the Shirakawa tennō. While ex- Tennō Shirakawa was still alive, really ruled this, and Toba was so in name only Tennō. After the death of Shirakawa in 1129 he finally held the de facto government and kept them as ex- Tennō after his abdication, as did his grandfather.

The Tennō Sutoku, Konoe and Go- Shirakawa were his sons.
