Emrys Hughes

Emrys Hughes ( * July 10, 1894 in Tonypandy, † October 18, 1969 ) was a Welsh politician of the Labour Party, which is now known primarily as a son and biographer of Keir Hardie.

Life

Hughes was in Tonypandy in Wales, the son of the priest JR Hughes born. He attended only the Abercynon Council School, the Mountain Ash Secondary School and finally the City of Leeds Training College and became a teacher by profession. During the First World War he was imprisoned as a conscientious objector. In 1924 he married Nan Hardie, daughter of Keir Hardie. Hughes was editor of the socialist magazine Forward.

In February 1946 Hughes was a Member of the British Parliament for the Scottish constituency of South Ayrshire. In the elections of 1950, 1951, 1955, 1959, 1964 and 1966, he was re-elected.

Hughes has written several works on political figures, including Winston Churchill, Keir Hardie, Harold Macmillan and Sydney Silverman.
