Endodontidae

The Endodontidae are a family from the suborder of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ), which is mainly distributed in the southern hemisphere. Many species are or were endemic to smaller and larger islands of the Indo- Pacific. Through the introduction of predatory snail species but a significant proportion of these species is already extinct.

Features

The representatives of the Endodontidae family have small to large housing; the housings are never reduced. They are usually flattened, the navel is usually broad and open. In some taxa, the umbilical opening but his narrowed secondary; the navel area serves as incubator for the eggs. The surface is ornamented with radial elements, which can, however, disappear in the adult portion of the housing. The opening is reinforced on all sides originally fins and folds, which also may terminate in " teeth " that are directed to the outside. The reinforcement may be reduced more or less in some taxa, or even missing. The eyes are always well developed. A longitudinal furrow between the body and the sole of the foot ( pedals longitudinal furrow ) and a further longitudinal furrow above the foot (supra pedals furrow ) unite at the tail end, but without forming a so-called " Caudalhornes " or enlargement of slime pit.

Geographical distribution

The family is found on the Pacific islands, New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, India, South and East Africa, Madagascar, South America and the South Atlantic island of St. Helena.

System

Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) ruled out any subfamilies, whereas Schileyko divided the family Endodontidae into three subfamilies, the Nominatunterfamilie Endodontinae and subfamilies Trachycystinae Schileyko, 1986 and Thysanotinae Godwin - Austen, in 1907. Latter two subfamilies are of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) placed as subfamilies of the family Charopidae.
